To test how female writers may affect comedy ratings, we turn to IMDb, which allows millions of users to rate movies and TV shows. For our analysis, we gathered data on IMDb’s top 100 comedy TV series.

To what extent are Denison students following Weinberg’s suggestion and diversifying their networks? In a survey administered to the student body in February of 2018, we asked students to name some of their closest friends at Denison.

Do disagreeable posts on social media stand any chance of changing opinions? Are they even looked at, or quickly glimpsed at and tossed aside? To explore willingness to engage with disagreeable content, we conducted a political study of nearly 1,400 individuals from a demographically diverse, online panel.

In a survey taken by nearly a third of the student body, 127 asked students how they felt about various individuals and groups. To measure attitudes, we used feeling thermometers, where respondents give scores ranging from 0 to 100.

Social life? Good grades? Enough sleep? With only 24 hours in a day, it’s hard to achieve all three. To investigate how Denison students address this dilemma, we surveyed nearly 600 students and asked how many hours a day they spend on the following activities: sleeping, hanging out with friends, and studying/homework.

When is the gym its busiest? And what kinds of students go there most often? We use swipe transaction data to look at when the student athletic center gets its most foot traffic. We also distributed a survey to the entire student body and merged their answers with their swipe frequencies.

Each year at Denison, there are a handful of issues that grab the attention of just enough students and spark campus-wide debate. In a survey taken by nearly a third of the student body, we measured attitudes on five different campus issues currently being debated.

Students often use majors as a heuristic for judging one another. Communication major? Probably not very smart. Bio major? Must be a bad writer. Econ major? Frat star. To better understand this phenomenon, I set out to explore how students view other majors.
